At the same time, the heavy cavalry of the Royal Army was sent to engage Vartan's horsemen on the other side of the battlefield. This would prevent Vartan's cavalry from coming to the aid of the bowmen. Broecker led his knights into the attack, with Locke close behind. With lances lowered and riding full speed, the collision between the two masses of horsemen created a cacophony that resonated across the entire valley. In the initial stages of the encounter, Locke killed one man with the point of his lance, but the impact had been so violent that the shaft splintered. Now well in the midst of the enemy force, he drew his sword to fight off the warriors that were on all sides."

Winds of WharhalenBraslon's knight dropped the visor on his helmet and drew his sword. Marchek drew his sword, but Locke placed his hand on his friend's arm. Locke lowered his visor and unsheathed his own sword as the two knights approached each other. Wyant spurred his horse into a gallop and raised his sword upward and across his body. As they passed, Wyant brought his blade down hard but it was deflected harmlessly by Locke. Turning to face each other again, this time Braslon's knight charged with the point of his sword directed at his opponent...

Locke Thomason experienced a series of personal tragedies and unexpected misfortunes. As a result of these, Locke left his mountain homeland bound for Killarassee in the south of the kingdom.  While there he met a young peasant girl, a slave of a ruthless nobleman. In an effort to buy her freedom, Locke himself was arrested and later sold into slavery.
